TOTO's History of Conservation

While other toilet manufacturers are adapting to and learning conservation and sustainable practices, TOTO has been practicing and applying those principles for decades. Preservation of resources together with the highest levels of product performance are the fundamental focus of TOTO's ongoing research and development. That focus has become an obsession and hallmark of TOTO toilet manufacturing. TOTO began research and developing high efficiency plumbing technologies over 30 years ago. They were one of the first, and are still intent on being the best.

In 1992, when the rest of the plumbing industry was struggling to adopt regulatory conservation mandates within the Federal Energy Policy Act of 1992 away from 3.5 gallon per flush (GPF), TOTO introduced the very first effective American ‑style 1.6 GPF toilets. Those products outperformed many of their 3.5 GPF counterparts while conserving twice as much water. And they established TOTO's high performance, high quality, high efficiency reputation.
